Archery Week: Boronganons Arrowed Shots During The 4-Days Long Tryouts

Updated: Sep 2, 2022

Focusing on shaping and honing the skills of young and aspiring archers, the national coaches sought potential players in Borongan City during the archery week in a 4-day long tryout, held at People's Center (formerly JTR Sports Complex), which went on from June 22–25, 2022.

Participated by ages of 6 and above, the aspiring archers were led by the national coaches in the subordination to local coaches from different schools in the city— the professionals first shared tips and proper etiquette of archery which further taught them the basics.

Coach Pia Bidaure, who won the gold medal during the 31st SEA Games, expressed her thoughts on the mini tournament which happened on the last day of the event.

"Nakakatuwa tignan na ang dami pa lang may gusto [ng archery], it's just [that] the resources are not there. It's easier that the resources go [to] the community para malaman natin kung sino talaga yung may mga gusto, and to develop the athletes," she vocalized via an interview from Borongan Information Office Facebook Page.

The ESNCHS Archery Coach Pamela Abellar was also present as one of the local coaches for the event, with her former athletes Brad Hilton Fabula and Angel Tanglao, she expects the aspirants to represent the school one day for the district, division, and hope representing further for the region.

. "Paano makaka-generate hin income and employment of course if this kind of activity will continue w/ our LGU maybe the Borongan city become famous so dadayo-on na kita," she stated, referring to the benefits of such an event for the City's progress in the sport.

Hoping to produce potential players, the National Head Coach Ms. Purita Joy Mariño has lectured the trainees about the importance of the sport for the betterment of the archery community in Borongan.

The National Head Coach focused on honing the skills of the young players, assisted by her fellow national coaches: Peter John Delos Reyes and Michael Solier.

An upcoming Grade 12 STEM Student from ESNCHS Jamila Jamer, who placed 3rd in the 17 categories of the mini-tournament, shared her insights about the event.

"It was [a] great experience as well as [a] great planned and developed event that helps many young and adults [to] help discover their potential in archery," she wrote.

The event ended with a mini tournament, in which 27 participants brought home cash prizes and certificates for winning in an age-based category.

With more than 200 registrants, the Borongan Archery Week event was inaugurated by the Municipality's Local Government Unit in collaboration with World Archery Philippines, Philippine Sports Commission, and the Philippine Olympic Committee. The event ran a coup with the triumphant celebration for archery week together with City's Charter Anniversary.
