BORONGAN CITY, PHILIPPINES—Eugenio S. Daza Pilot Elementary School (ESDPES) Special Education (SPED) teachers and board members of the organizing committee for the 2022 Borongan City Para Games, firsthand initiated the outdoor sports categories during the second day of the event at the ESNCHS Oval, on August 31.
Consisting of players from elementary, secondary, and out-of-school adults, the event held the outdoor sports categories: 100-meter run, 400-meter run, Long Jump, Discus Throw, and Shot Put, on ESNCHS, while the Swimming category was located at Minasngi Beach in Maydolong, Eastern Samar. Indoor events like Chess, Goal Ball (visually impaired), Badminton, and Table Tennis are also part of the 4-day-long games, held outside ESNCHS.
To generate more Para-athletes from the municipality, SPED Teacher, Dr. Luisa J. Payuyao, stated the purpose of launching such an event for People With Disabilities who can compete in future tournaments.
“Iginhatag ha amon it yadi nga event hit CSWDO [City Social Welfare and Development Office], in preparation hit [mga] para-athletes nga potential nga magrepresent for national and international games sugad hit Paralympics,” she explained.
Edmond Balan Jr., a part of the organizing committee, moreover shared the importance of the event in making the PWDs in the community feel significant in playing sports.
“Una, para makita it kakayahan it bata, hiton nga usa nga person with a disability nga makita nira nga diri la iton nga academics iton ira la pagkuanan [to be focused on] kundi pwede daman hira hi-igawan hit sports nga magparticipate,” he expressed.
Balan further explained that the out-of-school youths and young para-athletes in training are the ones who will represent the municipality when the time comes.
“Didi daman hit schools ngahin out of school youths nga mahidevelop daman it ira sportsmanship,” he vocalized. “Tapos usa daman nga amon purpose daman gihapon is hit pag select hit magiging prospect nga player hit Borongan,” he added.
The program is divided into three categories for each sporting event. The official start of the games started on August 30, at Harayupan, Barangay Campesao, and will run until September 2.
