Basada's 35 Years of Service to ESNCHS Reaches Endgame

Updated: Mar 4, 2022

BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar-- In pursuit of his retirement, now former Eastern Samar National Comprehensive High School (ESNCHS) Principal Alfredo Basada concluded his three-decade-and-a-half-long legacy in ESNCHS and 43 years in total career in the Department of Education (DepEd) as he takes off for his last duty on the 28th and also the last day of February.

As a former ESNCHSian who started his first year in High School circa the ESNCHS' foundation in 1969, Basada returned to serve his alma mater as a fresh graduate and teacher back in 1978. His service as a teacher lasted until 2006, and then he once again set foot on the premises as the school principal in 2015 until the last day of his duty.

"First-year ak hadto han High School hin nga iskuylahan han 1969, ginawas la han college, binalik liwat nga Maestro na, ngahin pira ka tuig tikang han pagbaya ko ngahaw, naging School Principal ak. Asya dinhi na talaga ak hin sulig ha Compre," Basada reminisced.

(I was in my first year in High School back in 1969 and I stayed until I finally graduated so I left for college. But I did return as a teacher and years after leaving my service in ESNCHS, I came back and already became the School Principal)

For Basada, his years as Principal could be described as a venture with bliss.

"I would say that my career was both challenging and enjoyable. Structuring an ideal school came with challenges but being able to witness the development as the Principal, truly was enjoyable for me," he shared.

Basada refused to give an imperative message for the next School Head, only bidding luck to his successor.

"I cannot dictate what to do (to whoever seconds the position) for I know that we differ in our mindsets and ways of leading, just like how each person does," he said in Waray.

It takes passion to uphold a legacy that runs throughout a successful reign. Keeping the composure of success in a school is given to be the top priority of those within it and on top.

This essence was echoed by Basada as he shares a message for the faculty he has worked with overhead in ESNCHS.

"I say that you should continue what we started to develop in the school. And so you should work out greater growth for the next years. I am wishing the whole ESNCHS community good luck."

ESNCHS Faculty in Working Under Former Principal Basada

Serving ESNCHS for 35 years enabled the upholding of the former Principal's legacy, which has instituted the development of the school while he was overhead and supervising the work of the whole ESNCHS Faculty.

Quad from the ESNCHS Faculty has uttered their ways of perceiving the former Principal based on his leadership and their experiences in working beneath him throughout their share of time in his years of service.

Danna Balbuena, who is a Junior High School Teacher, has reminisced times when her capabilities have been tested by the tasks handed to her, although those in turn, became a way for these experiences to shift into bigger learnings.

"Working under Sir Basada, those were generally both fun and tough times. What I find remarkable about having worked under his leadership was his way of encouraging others to do better in their job by giving them tasks/opportunities to learn without fear of failure. He has been a supportive leader especially when it comes to the professional growth of teachers," Balbuena shared.

The thrill in those challenges was also found by the Assistant Principal, Dean Hermano, as he recalled being surprised by what is outside of the former Principal's box, in terms of his visions which have also likably complimented timeliness.

"Working with Mr. Basada was like being on my toes all the time. I have to prepare for things unexpected, e.g. he has ideas and plans that are at times unexpected. Another thing is that he values timeliness which I think is his biggest asset," Hermano spoke.

Meanwhile, the Araling Panlipunan (AP) Head, Edgar Capito, had his own perception of the former Principal who he has conveyed to be firm and prim in his practices as a leader.

"Sir Basada can be perceived as the kind of person who is firm. He always makes sure that things are in order, which is essential given that we are in fact, a big school. Aside from that, his leadership is fatherly. His fatherly upbringings are reflective to his practices in guiding and being overhead his subordinates," Capito voiced out.

Angel Alegre who is a Senior High School Teacher keeps up the same stance. He shared the same thought of the former Principal's inclination being fatherly but to an extent that has also channeled honesty and humility.

"The whole experience was a never-ending grasp of wisdom. Sir Fred, was more than his supervisory prowess, but his fatherly acts which deepen the organization's intent. His heart captured the spirit of fairness in effectuating the rectitude of the institution - thus creating a sound relationship among its stakeholders. Salamat, Sir Fred. Happy retirement!"
